This Golden Milk with Fresh Turmeric is a soothing hot drink that can be enjoyed at any time of day. The ingredients include fresh turmeric root, ginger root, almond milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, and coconut oil.
What is Golden Milk?
Golden milk is an ancient Indian beverage made only from turmeric blended with piping hot milk. When turmeric had its moment in 2016, Western variations of golden milk, such as this version, came to prominence.
Turmeric has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. It contains the active ingredient curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin has been shown to prevent depression, reverse liver damage, and prevent and treat Alzheimer's. Studies suggest that taking a turmeric supplement is more beneficial than drinking it in a drink form.

Recipe Ingredients
Note: The full quantities are shown in the recipe card below.
- Fresh Turmeric Root - you can buy fresh turmeric root in Asian grocery stores or in bulk at Costco. If you can't find any, use ½ - 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric. If you buy fresh turmeric root in bulk, it can be stored in the freezer.
- Fresh Ginger Root - widely available at supermarkets.
- Almond Milk - I love to use unsweetened almond milk. You can use any milk of your choice, such as cow's milk, coconut milk, rice milk, oat milk, etc.
- Coconut Oil - this adds some creaminess.
- Maple Syrup - for sweetness.
- Cinnamon - a tiny amount of ground cinnamon adds an extra layer of spiciness.
- Pinch of black pepper - optional. Black pepper is said to aid the absorption of turmeric.
How to Make Golden Milk with Fresh Turmeric
Note: This is a summary of the instructions. The full ingredients and instructions are shown in the recipe card below.
Blender Method
If you have a high-speed blender, like a Nutribullet or Vitamix, you don't have to grate the turmeric and ginger. This method is beneficial, as the bright yellow colour of turmeric can stain.
- Add all the ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour the golden milk into a small saucepan and heat for 5 minutes on low to medium heat, stirring regularly. Straining the golden milk of the grated turmeric and ginger is purely optional before drinking.
Stove Top Method
- Grate the turmeric and ginger root, and add to the saucepan along with the rest of the ingredients.
- Heat gently on low to medium heat for 5 minutes and regularly stir.
- Strain through a fine sieve if you don't want tiny bits of turmeric and ginger. This is optional and depends on your taste. Check for sweetness and enjoy.

Delicious! I tried the Golden milk on the stove top by the slicing turmeric and ginger etc. method and also the tea. I sampled the tea and stored the remainder in a mason jar to heat up for an after dinner soothing drink. I’m not big on sweet so I tried the tea plain and then with a scant teaspoon of honey and wow, what a flavor boost to an already pleasant taste! I drank the golden milk right away. Again delicious so creamy and satisfying. I look forward to trying the blender method tomorrow.
Thank you,
